Horseback Riding Elopement

Some elopements feel like stepping into another world! When we first met M&W, they told us they wanted their wedding day to feel like an adventure straight out of The Lord of the Rings—wild landscapes, horses, meaningful moments, and a celebration focused entirely on the two of them. What followed was one of the most magical elopement days we've ever experienced in the Dolomites.

Getting Ready at Cyprianerhof

Their day began slowly and peacefully at the beautiful Cyprianerhof Hotel, nestled beneath the dramatic peaks of the Rosengarten mountain range.

They chose to get ready separately, giving themselves a quiet moment to reflect before seeing each other for the first time. While the bride was getting her hair and makeup done by a stylist, the groom spent the morning enjoying the anticipation of the day ahead.

By the time they stepped outside for their first look, the sun was already shining brightly. And not just a little bit—late May in the Dolomites usually brings mild spring temperatures, but this year had a surprise in store. Temperatures climbed to nearly 30°C (86°F), making it feel more like midsummer than the beginning of the season.

Their first look took place right in front of the hotel surrounded by mountain views. It was one of those moments where the rest of the world simply disappears.

Why Early Season Elopements Are Worth It

Afterward, we headed to the stables where their horseback adventure would begin.

Choosing an elopement date at the very beginning of the summer season can feel like a gamble. Snow can still linger at higher elevations, temperatures can vary dramatically, and weather forecasts often change by the hour. Then again, that's true in the mountains no matter what month you choose.

What makes early season elopements so special is the solitude.

Despite spending hours riding through some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Dolomites, we didn't encounter a single other person. Not one.

The trails belonged entirely to them.

With towering peaks surrounding us, green alpine meadows stretching into the distance, and horses carrying them through landscapes that looked like they belonged in Middle-earth, it was impossible not to feel transported into another world.

A Picnic Worthy of Hobbits

While Max documented their horseback ride, Lisa disappeared to prepare a surprise.

On top of a small hill overlooking the surrounding mountains, she set up a private picnic waiting for the couple when they returned from their ride.

As the horses happily grazed nearby, they sat down together and enjoyed a well-deserved meal in the afternoon sun.

Afterwards, they opened a collection of letters from loved ones back home. Since they had chosen to celebrate their wedding day just the two of them, these letters became a beautiful way to include family and friends in their experience. Some messages made them laugh, others brought a few tears, and all of them served as a reminder that although they had traveled to the Dolomites alone, they were surrounded by the love and support of the people closest to them.

Of course, no Lord of the Rings inspired elopement would be complete without a few carefully chosen details.

Alongside their wedding cake sat homemade Lembas bread, and one of our favorite signs from the entire day proudly declared:

"No admittance except on party business."

A detail that would have made Bilbo proud.

Private Vows in the Forest

With temperatures continuing to rise throughout the afternoon, the couple chose a shaded forest clearing for their private vows.

It turned out to be the perfect decision.

The air beneath the trees was noticeably cooler, creating a peaceful atmosphere that felt completely removed from the outside world. Surrounded by sunlight filtering through the leaves, they shared promises they had written for one another in complete privacy.

Well, almost complete privacy.

Their only guests were a handful of sleepy cows resting nearby. Every now and then, one would become curious enough to wander over and investigate what exactly was happening in their corner of the forest.

Dancing Among Wildflowers

After exchanging vows, they wandered through fields filled with wildflowers and shared their first dance together. No stage. No audience. No schedule.

Just the two of them, surrounded by mountain views and summer colors, dancing in a meadow as the afternoon slowly turned toward evening.

Moments like these are exactly why we love elopements so much. There is space to breathe, to be present, and to experience every part of the day together.

Pizza, Sunset, and the Perfect Ending

As the day continued, we made one final stop for something every great Italian adventure needs: pizza.

After refueling and sharing stories from the day, we headed to a nearby lake for sunset.

The evening light reflected across the water as the mountains slowly turned golden and then blue. They watched the sun disappear behind the peaks and soaked in the final moments of a day. It was an unforgettable journey filled with horses, mountains, wildflowers, curious cows, Lembas bread, and enough Middle-earth magic to last a lifetime.

And honestly, we can't imagine a better way to start a marriage.
