Dolomites Elopement in May

There is something about spring in the Dolomites that never quite behaves the way you expect it to. One moment the mountains still carry traces of winter, the next they are glowing under almost summer-like light. It is unpredictable, a little wild and exactly what made this wedding day so unforgettable. This beautiful couple traveled from England to celebrate their marriage in the Dolomites alongside their closest family members.

An Early Start for an Unforgettable Sunrise

Their wedding day began long before most people would even think about setting an alarm.

At 3:00 a.m., the bride's hair and makeup styling began. While that might sound extreme, sunrise in the mountains is always worth the effort.

As the first rays of sunlight illuminated the peaks surrounding their hotel, the couple shared a quiet first look outside. The world was still asleep, and the peaceful atmosphere made the moment feel even more intimate.

The weather turned out to be one of the biggest surprises of the entire trip. While May in the Dolomites can still feel very much like spring—and sometimes even winter—this particular week brought almost summer-like conditions. Temperatures climbed to nearly 30°C (86°F), which is highly unusual for this time of year.

Just ten days earlier, parts of the region had still seen fresh snowfall.

This dramatic contrast perfectly illustrates one of the realities of planning a mountain elopement: you never know exactly what the weather will do. Whether you're getting married in May, July, or September, flexibility is always part of the adventure.

Thankfully, much of the day was spent at higher elevations where temperatures remained far more comfortable, allowing everyone to enjoy the sunshine without the intense heat often experienced down in the valleys.

One of the biggest advantages of eloping in May is exactly this sense of calm. The summer season has not fully started yet, which means fewer visitors, quieter roads, and a much more relaxed experience overall.

After their first look, we packed up and headed toward one of the most iconic locations in the Dolomites.

Lago di Braies at Sunrise

Lago di Braies is arguably the most famous lake in the Dolomites—and for good reason. The emerald water, dramatic mountain backdrop, and charming boathouse create a scene that almost feels unreal.

Unfortunately, it is also one of the busiest locations in the region. During the day, thousands of visitors can make it nearly impossible to experience the lake in a quiet and meaningful way.

However, there is a solution: By privately renting the dock and boathouse during the early morning hours, couples can enjoy this incredible location without the crowds.

That is exactly what these two chose to do.

As the sun slowly climbed above the mountains, they stood together on the wooden dock and exchanged their private vows. The lake was calm, the air was crisp, and the only sounds came from birds waking up and the gentle movement of the water.

Watching the world slowly come to life around them made the experience even more magical. It felt as though they had the entire lake to themselves.

Coffee and Slow Moments

Before meeting their family later that day, we made one more stop.

In a nearby Italian town, the couple took some time to simply enjoy a coffee together. No rushing. No strict schedule.

Just a newly married couple sitting outside a café, soaking in the excitement of the day ahead.

These little moments often become some of the most memorable parts of an elopement. They create space to slow down and fully experience the day instead of rushing from one event to the next.

Lunch Above the Mountains

Around midday, the couple reunited with their family.

Together, everyone boarded a gondola and made their way high into the mountains. Surrounded by breathtaking views of the Dolomite peaks, they enjoyed a relaxed lunch while sharing stories and celebrating the morning's adventures.

With temperatures reaching almost 30°C (86°F) down in the valleys, everyone was grateful to spend the afternoon at higher elevations where the mountain air remained pleasantly cool.

One of the great advantages of a Dolomites elopement is that you can often escape the heat simply by heading higher into the mountains.

A Modern Ceremony with a Unique Beginning

Following lunch, it was time for the official ceremony.

Rather than choosing a traditional venue, the couple opted for a modern museum surrounded by mountain views.

One of the most memorable moments happened right at the beginning: As the ceremony started, a circular window designed like a camera shutter slowly opened, revealing the stunning landscape outside. It was a dramatic and unexpected entrance that immediately captured everyone's attention and created a truly unforgettable beginning to the ceremony.

Surrounded by their closest family members, they exchanged rings, shared emotional promises, and officially became husband and wife.

Tiramisu Instead of Wedding Cake

After the ceremony, everyone gathered for drinks, hugs, and congratulations.

Instead of serving a traditional wedding cake, the couple chose something far more Italian: tiramisu.

It was the perfect choice for a wedding in Italy and quickly became a favorite among their guests.

Sometimes the best wedding traditions are the ones you create yourself.

Ending the Day with a Family Dinner

Before the evening dinner, the bride also changed into a second outfit. Her first look had already been incredibly unique—a short, elegant dress paired with a flowing cape that moved beautifully throughout the day and perfectly suited the dramatic mountain scenery.

For the evening celebration, she chose something completely different: a fully sequined gown that caught the light with every movement. It was a stunning transformation that marked the transition from the adventurous daytime celebration into a more intimate and festive evening with their family.

Is Planning a Dolomites Elopement in May Worth It?

May is often overlooked when couples plan their Dolomites elopement, but it offers a very specific kind of magic.

Fewer crowds, quieter locations, and a landscape that still feels like it is waking up after winter.

At the same time, mountain weather remains unpredictable. This couple experienced that contrast firsthand—summer-like heat reaching 30°C (86°F), followed by the reminder that snow had fallen only days earlier.

That variability is part of what makes the Dolomites so unique. Conditions can change quickly, but so can the atmosphere—from snowy silence to golden alpine light within days.

For couples who are open to that unpredictability, May offers something rare: space, stillness, and a sense of having the mountains almost to yourself.
