A Moody Elopement in the Black Forest, Germany
When this couple from the US first got in touch with us, they knew one thing for sure: they didn’t want to do what everyone else was doing. They weren’t dreaming of an elopement in Italy with the same iconic backdrops everyone seems to choose. Instead, they wanted somewhere peaceful, atmospheric, and a little unexpected. Somewhere they could immerse themselves in nature, escape the crowds, and experience their wedding day in a way that felt entirely their own.
The Black Forest in southwestern Germany turned out to be exactly what they were looking for.
And with their love for nature and a vision that leaned towards the dark and moody, an autumn elopement in the forest felt like the perfect fit.
Embracing Whatever Autumn Had in Store
October in the Black Forest can be unpredictable. Rain, fog, damp forest paths, and overcast skies are all part of the experience. For this couple, that wasn’t something to worry about. They were happy to embrace whatever nature had in store for them.
In fact, they were drawn to the atmosphere that makes this time of year so special. The changing leaves, the quietness of the forest, the possibility of mist rolling through the trees. They didn’t need perfect weather or blue skies to consider their day a success.
Their vision was just as unconventional as their choice of destination. Instead of the usual light and airy wedding aesthetic, they wanted something darker, moodier, and a little different.
Think a bridal bouquet featuring black blooms and branches, a picnic styled in deep, dark tones, and a black Black Forest cherry cake made especially for the two of them.
Every detail felt intentional, without trying too hard to fit into a particular wedding trend.
As it turned out, October had a different surprise in store for us. We were treated to beautiful sunshine, warm golden light, and some of the most incredible autumn colors. The moody atmosphere they had envisioned was still there, just in a way none of us could have planned.
Getting Ready & First Look
The day began slowly at their Airbnb, where they got ready before stepping onto the rooftop terrace for their first look.
There’s something special about those first moments of a wedding day. The anticipation, the little details finally coming together, and the realization that this is actually happening.
With the surrounding landscape as their backdrop, they had a moment to take it all in before we headed into the forest.
No rushing between venues, no packed schedule of wedding traditions. Just the two of them, ready to spend the day exploring somewhere new and getting married on their own terms.
An Intimate Forest Ceremony
The Black Forest has a character all its own. Its dense woodland, moss-covered ground, winding paths, and hidden corners create a sense of seclusion that can be difficult to find in more well-known European wedding destinations.
We made our way into the forest to a quiet spot near a small pond, where they exchanged their vows.
Surrounded by trees and the stillness of the water, it felt like the kind of place where you could forget about everything happening beyond the forest.
That was exactly what they had been looking for: a place to be present with each other, without an audience or the pressure to turn their wedding into a performance.
After their ceremony, we continued exploring the forest together. The sunshine filtered through the branches, illuminating the colorful autumn leaves and creating little patches of golden light along the paths.
It was one of those moments that reminded us why we love photographing elopements outdoors. You can plan the location, choose the season, and create a beautiful concept, but you can never fully predict how the landscape will look or how the light will fall on a particular day.
Sometimes, the best moments are the ones you simply get to experience.
A Dark and Moody Picnic for Two
While we were out exploring, Lisa had been busy preparing a private picnic at the edge of the forest.
The setup followed the darker aesthetic they had envisioned, with deep tones and carefully chosen details that felt cohesive with the rest of their day. And, of course, there was the star of the show: a black Black Forest cherry cake, created especially for their intimate celebration. The Black Forest is famous for its namesake cake, so incorporating a dark, unconventional version into their wedding felt like a fitting nod to the region.
After spending the morning wandering through the woods and exchanging their vows, they finally had time to sit down, enjoy some food, and simply be together.
They cut their wedding cake for two, took in their surroundings, and enjoyed a slower part of the day without needing to be anywhere else.
We love creating these little experiences for our couples. An elopement doesn't have to revolve around a ceremony and a photoshoot. It can include the things you genuinely enjoy, whether that's a private picnic, a special meal, a favorite activity, or simply finding a beautiful place to sit and watch the world go by.
Exploring the Black Forest
With no large guest list or rigid schedule to stick to, we had plenty of time to explore more of the surrounding area. We wandered through some of the area's striking natural scenery and discovered places that felt a world away from the more familiar European wedding destinations.
For couples who love being outdoors, this is one of the things that makes the Black Forest such an interesting place to elope. It isn't just about finding one beautiful backdrop and staying there. It's about spending the day immersed in a landscape, discovering new places, and letting the experience unfold naturally. And in autumn, the changing colors add another layer to all of it.
We ended the day high above the surrounding landscape, on one of the Black Forest's higher peaks. The sun was beginning to set, casting warm light across the rolling hills and distant forests. After a day spent among the trees, it felt like the perfect way to finish: opening up the view, taking a breath, and watching the last light of the day settle over the landscape.
The Black Forest isn't known for towering Alpine peaks, and that's part of its appeal. Its softer mountain silhouettes, expansive woodland, and rolling hills have a quieter kind of beauty. Standing there together, we had a chance to take in just how much the day had held: a rooftop first look, vows beside the water, golden light filtering through the forest, a picnic for two, and a sunset overlooking the landscape they had traveled so far to experience.
Why Choose the Black Forest for Your Elopement?
For couples traveling from the US or elsewhere in the world, Italy and the Alps might be the first places that come to mind when planning a European elopement. But if you're drawn to quieter landscapes, woodland scenery, and a more understated atmosphere, the Black Forest deserves a place on your list.
Especially in autumn, the region offers a beautiful combination of colorful forests, peaceful lakes, dramatic gorges, and panoramic views across rolling hills.
It's an especially lovely destination for couples who want to spend their wedding day outdoors, explore different locations, and embrace the season rather than depend on perfect weather.
And if you're looking for somewhere that feels a little less expected than the usual European elopement destinations, the Black Forest offers an opportunity to experience a different side of Germany.
Of course, no destination is completely free from visitors, and popular spots can get busy. But with thoughtful planning, local knowledge, and a focus on lesser-known locations, it's possible to create an elopement that feels much more private and personal.
You don't need dramatic mountain peaks or a famous landmark to have an extraordinary wedding day. Sometimes, all you need is a beautiful stretch of forest, the right people by your side, and the freedom to celebrate in a way that feels true to you.
